Then my parents, who were conservative, announced they were getting a subscription to The Observer. The Observer editors had been at a different publication, heard about my work, and called me into a meeting.ĮLLE: Were you nervous writing about your private life?ĬB: At first I was writing the column in the first person.

The column came about in 1994-96, through word of mouth. I also wrote freelance articles to pay the rent. I always wrote fiction, including a children's book for Simon & Schuster. I get to the set once a week.ĮLLE: How did you land your first column with The Observer?ĬB: I moved to New York when I was 19. In a lot of ways, it was a dark, underground movie.ĮLLE: As executive producer of The Carrie Diaries, what is your role?ĬB: I read the different versions of the script and watch the cuts of the episodes. It was a small show in the beginning, very underground, a cult phenomenon.ĮLLE: Susan Seidelman directed the pilot she had directed Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan.ĬB: People ask me what my favorite episode was, and it's the pilot. There has been a real change in the possibilities of how women live their lives.ĮLLE: After you sold the rights to Sex and the City, what was your role in shaping that show?ĬB: I worked with the four writers for the first two seasons much of it was taken directly from my book.
